Book cover design

Edgar Allan Poe, The Cask of Amontillado, 1848

This project’s focus was to take a beloved story that is often taught in school and create a cover for it that would appeal to the intended audience. Edgar Allan Poe is a prolific American writer whose short stories teach young readers about symbolism and its importance to storytelling.

The Cask of Amontillado is one that I had experience reading in middle school, and it’s plot stuck with me through the years. A story of deception, madness, and revenge; I worked to create a cover that would touch on these themes in a way that would encourage students to take interest with what’s inside.

To do this, I chose to depict the two main characters in a flat, graphic novel style of illustration. Making use of dramatic lighting, I intended to portray the drama of the story through the balance of light and dark.
