Mitski. Be the Cowboy,

Tasked with redesigning a CD cover for an artist of my choice, I worked to create album art for indie artist Miski. Her album, “Be the Cowboy”, focuses on feelings of loneliness, heartbreak and exhaustion, ideas which bleed through in both her written lyrics and sound.
I chose to illustrate an interpretation of the album’s title, which Mitski said herself is not referencing the cowboy we would think of today, but a representation of confidence and, for her, a break away from societal norms.

Using digital painting techniques, I illustrated a cover that conveys loneliness and a sense of calm. The setting and style is meant to be a continuation of the art from the music video for, “A Pearl”, but in this context is used to represent the album as a whole, not just the single track, and is meant to create a consistent setting and character for the story.
